Virgo Season

I can't think of a better time than Virgo season to begin our journey of exploration through the signs, planets and houses. As a Virgo ascending, I thought I would start my discussion of the these core concepts of Astrology beginning with the sign in my first house. The timing worked out perfectly with the recent Virgo New Moon, beginning the Virgo season. During the season of Virgo, I will be discussing traits of the sign of Virgo, the sixth house, and the planet

Mercury. Virgo rules the sixth house and Mercury is Virgo’s guiding planet. So, over the next few weeks, Let’s dive into all things Virgo and honor this somewhat misunderstood and underappreciated sign that holds a special place in my heart and the zodiac.

Everyone has each of the 12 signs of the zodiac incorporated into their personality and varying ways. Virgo rules one of your houses according to the time when you were born, and this is shown in your natal chart. And since Mercury is the ruling planet of Virgo, where Mercury is in your chart, attributes of the sign of Virgo are at play. While we all have Virgo attributes, they display in very different ways according to how they appear in our natal charts. As we learn more about each of the signs, houses, and planets, these interactions become clearer. This will help you clarify the role that each of these elements plays in your unique chart and how you can make choices that help you find self-understanding and balance. The natal chart simply gives us a snapshot of the sky when we were born. That’s why it is important to know your exact time of birth, if possible, since this can affect several aspects of your chart. But this is simply a starting point to assess your natural tendencies without any outside influence. As you go through life and have a variety of life experiences, make choices that strengthen or weaken different personality traits or skills, some of these propensities will shift. The natal chart is a guide, not written in stone, but rather a starting place for insight and self-understanding. This may seem like a lot, but we must start somewhere, and, in my opinion, there is no better place than with the sign of Virgo.

Virgo is a mutable earth sign and the sixth sign of the zodiac, ruling the sixth house. Virgo is the last of the 6 personal signs and its countersign and opposite is Pisces in the 12th house. Their statement is “I Analyze” and they are often accumulating information with the drive for constant improvement. Virgos believe that there is more to life than just the importance of the individual. They use their powers of analysis and organization to compile all the lessons of the previous five signs of the zodiac to help better the world around them. They believe in contributing to the greater good and use their powers of organization and ‘doer’ attitude to bring order to a chaotic world. With Virgo being an earth sign, they are very stable and focused on the realm of the senses. And while they understand the importance of helping others, they may, at times, be stopped short from acting on some of these impulses to help and connect by their perfectionism and desire to do everything right. Virgo’s symbol is the only feminine symbol in the zodiac as the Virgin (and also the deer and ant which are referenced less often). It is a Yin sign, meaning that it expresses in a feminine way and has a receptive feminine energy (the zodiac signs are divided evenly into 6 Yin and 6 Yang signs). Virgos do not procrastinate and often become frustrated with people who do not operate under the same value system as effectively as they do. They can be resistant to change and may appear to be critical when they feel threatened or insecure, often being confronted with values that are different from their own. They create routines to help them feel secure and while they may prefer to operate in the background socially or professionally, when the situation calls for more outgoing behavior, Virgos can appear extroverted and be comfortable getting attention in group situations. Virgos focus on continual self-improvement and tend to feel that they need to earn their self-esteem with their deeds. Virgos tend to be hard on themselves, but they bring a lot to the table, zodiacally speaking. I intend to channel my inner Virgo this season, honoring what I consider to be both the positive and sahdow aspects of this sign.
